2019 European Ada Awards Finalists Announced

On behalf of the 2019 European Ada Awards jury and under the esteemed patronage of of Ms. Mariya Gabriel, European Commissioner for the Digital Economy and Society, the Digital Leadership Institute and its partners are thrilled to announce the finalists of the 2019 European Ada Awards !

2019 European Digital Woman of the Year™ Award Finalists:

Nadia Aimé (Belgium)

Once homeless and a school dropout herself, Nadia’s work focuses on improving the lives of vulnerable groups, through education and creating more interest and enthusiasm surrounding careers within entrepreneurship and the digital sector. Today, she is an avid technologist social/tech entrepreneur, educator, a single mom, and studying cyber-security who seeks to help people evolve in a fast-paced world of technology and business. Nadia’s passion for sharing knowledge and constant learning, most especially improving her tech skills which she hones, birthed She Leads Digital, which is a Brussels based tech organization, aims at providing programs and initiatives that foster enthusiasm and encourage women and youth to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and math fields.

Dee Saigal (United Kingdom)

Dee Saigal is the Founder, CEO & Creative Director of Erase All Kittens – an adventure game designed to give girls the confidence to code, whilst teaching digital and 21st Century skills. Like many women, Dee grew up believing that careers in technology were more for boys, which is why it took her years to follow her dream of getting into game design – and why she founded EAK. She and her team spent 12 months interviewing hundreds of students before designing their product, in order to create a coding tool that girls genuinely love. EAK has 150,000 players in over 100 countries, and 95% of girls want to learn more about coding after playing. Dee’s goal is for EAK to transform the way that children perceive coding and engineering, and to empower millions of girls worldwide with transferable, digital skills.

Eva Meyer de Stadelhofen (France)

Eva is the 21 year old founder of GirlCode, an international nonprofit who aims to reduce the gender gap in the STEM industry by offering free coding lessons to girls of age 7 to 17 in their schools. She also created a mentorship program through which GirlCode students can meet entrepreneurs, scientists, and all-around girl bosses in order to help them find their STEM superstar. GirlCode, which started as a small club, has rapidly grown these last two years into a worldwide “sisterhood of nerds”, with 304 clubs in 25 different countries and an estimated impact of 81’345 girls as of September 2019. Thanks to her work with her organisation, Eva has recently been chosen by Global Changemakers and the Thomas Reuters Foundation to attend their summits as one of the best entrepreneurs worldwide.

2019 European Digital Girl of the Year™ Award Finalists:

Tayra from Bulgaria (10 year old and under category)

Tayra is 10 years old and was born and lives in Sofia. Besides the gift of learning foreign languages (at the age of 8 she speaks some German, English, Chinese and Turkish), Tayra has another talent in the field of modern computer technologies. At the age of 8 Tayra participated in the  IT Znayko award contest and won a prize for an original idea and, as a member of the Coder Dojo club, won an award from the Bulgarian version of Coolest Projects Sofia 2017. The great victory comes in Dublin, Ireland, at the international competition Coolest Project 2017 involving more than 1,000 children from 17 countries. She won in the Scratch category at Coolest Projects 2017, when she is only 8 years old with her awesome project ABCD Code, which is a Scratch game developed to help children learn about healthy eating and the benefits of fruit and vegetables with the help of Makey Makey. The Healthy Eating project in English and Bulgarian version also became involved in the kindergarten process. She personally organizes and participates in workshops. At the age of 9, on 25.03.2018 she won a special prize from the Softuniada Kids (organized by Software University in Sofia, Bulgaria) with an amazing project (scratch project- “Three bears farytail”with the sign language videos for deaf kids).

Selin from Turkey (11-14 year old category)

Selin  is 13 years old and loves building robots and coding also loves animals and travelling. She started coding when she was 8 years old. Selin won first prize in the Hardware category at Coderdojo’s Coolest Projects International in 2018 with iC4U, her robot guide dog for the visually impaired. She was also a finalist in the Open Innovation category of the European Youth Awards 2018. In 2019 she received a 100% educational scholarship and attended a Robotic and Engineering summer camp held at Stanford University. She is presently working on the second version of her robot guide dog, the Raspberry Pi version and on a robot that aims to make life easier in schools and hospitals. She is hoping that her robot will help to make children’s stay in hospital a little easier if only to make them smile. She codes in Python language.    She is working on integrating image processing, voice control and artificial intelligence assisted dialogue capabilities in her robot project.  her aim is to study robotics at MIT or Stanford University and to build a humanoid. Selin speaks English, Turkish and French, she is also learning Python, C++ and Java. She facilitates workshops, mentors her peers and gives presentations at technology related events in order to inspire others especially girls.  She lives in Istanbul, Turkey with her mum, dad and dog Bailey.

Anne from Belgium (15-17 year old category)

Anne Maelbrancke, 15 years old, student at the Bernardustechnicum Oudenaarde, Belgium. Anne has been a member of Coderdojo Belgium since 2014. In 2015 she was confronted with a friend who had to stay at the hospital for quite a long time. She proposed to start an initiative called Clinicoders (facebook.com/clinicoders) to bring technology and programming to children in the hospital. Monthly, together with friend, she animates children patients with programming and robots.
Clinicoders also donates resources to hospitals to educate technology and programming in their schools. This year a “Clinimakers” initiative has been started to trigger children to build solutions for disabled children.

Alai from Spain (15-17 year old category)

Alai’s passion for STEM began when she was 7 years old. She has experience coding in multiple code languages, and has attended STEM workshops from textile technology to designing and 3D prototyping. In 2019, she was invited to speak at the Amazon Web Services Summit in Madrid to discuss her experience as a girl in technology. Additionally, this past May she was invited by Google to Women TechMakers Alicante to discuss her experience and future projects.

5 July 2019 – G7 & UNESCO International Conference (Paris): On 5 July in Paris, in the attendance of Ms. Malala Yousufzai and French President Emanuel Macron, Ms. Che Miller Van Dÿck, DLI Founding Director, and Ms. Loredana Bucseneanu, DLI Development Director,  joined a G7 and UNESCO international conference on the topic of “Innovating for Girls’ and Women’s Education.”


10-11 July 2019 – IMAGINE: A Better World, a Global Education Conference (Seattle): On 10-11 July in Seattle, Washington, Ms. Che Miller Van Dÿck, DLI Founding Director,  joined IMAGINE: A Better World, a global education conference hosted by Amazon Web Services, long-time supporters of the DLI mission promoting inclusive digital transformation.


24 July 2019 – Women’s Entrepreneurship Day Ambassadors Meeting (Global): On 24 July, Ms. Che Miller Van Dÿck, DLI Founding Director,  joined a meeting of the Women’s Entrepreneurship Day Global Ambassadors in preparation for the 2019 Women’s Entrepreneurship Day celebrations taking place on 15-16 November.

2019 European Ada Awards Open

EU Ada Awards Patron, Ms. Mariya Gabriel, EU Commissioner for the Digital Economy & Society

Under the esteemed patronage of Ms. Mariya Gabriel, European Commissioner for the Digital Economy and Society, the Digital Leadership Institute and its partners are honoured to announce the opening of nominations for the 2019-2020 European Ada Awards recognising top girls and women* in digital fields from across Europe.


Online nominations for outstanding girls and women in digital sectors will be open until 20 September 2019, and winners will be celebrated at the sixth annual European Ada Awards ceremony, taking place on 16 October in Brussels as part of European Code Week and the WomenInTech.Brussels Women Code Festival. The event is open to members of the public who register, on a first-come-first-served basis. Official 2019 European Ada Awards timings may be found on the Awards calendar.

10 May 2019 – Women in ICT Sharing Experiences (Brussels) : On 10 May, Ms. Katja Legisa, DLI inQube Director,  joined the eighth edition of the Women in ICT Sharing Experiences Annual Networking event organised by the Centre for Balanced Leadership in Brussels.


15 May 2019 – EC Digital Skills and Jobs Coalition Governing Board Meeting (Brussels) : Ms. Che Van Dyck, DLI Founding Director,  joined the seventh meeting of the Governing Board for the European Commission’s Digital Skills and Jobs Coalition, taking place in Brussels on 15 May.


21 May 2019 – STEM Fair (Los Angeles): On 21 May, Ms. Che Van Dyck, DLI Founding Director, contributed to organising a STEM Fair in Los Angeles County, in order to encourage young people, especially girls, to pursue studies and careers in these areas.


28 May 2019 – Computer Science Panel (Los Angeles) : Ms. Che Van Dyck, DLI Founding Director, joined a panel promoting Computer Science studies and careers for Los Angeles County high school students, especially young women, taking place on 28 May in Redondo Beach.


13 June 2019 – Digital Skills and Jobs Governing Board Meeting (Bucharest): On 13 June, Ms. Cheryl Miller, DLI Founder,  joined the eighth meeting of the Governing Board of the Digital Skills and Jobs Coalition of Europe. The meeting took place in Bucharest as part of Digital Assembly 2019, hosted by the Romanian Presidency of the Council of the European Union. Ms. Loredana Bucseneanu, DLI Director of Development, also joined the event as representative of Belgium to the joint meeting of the National Coalitions for Digital Skills and Jobs.


13 June 2019 – WEgate Stakeholder Meeting (Brussels): On 13 June July in Brussels, Ms. Katja Legisa, DLI Entrepreneurship Director,  joined a stakeholder meeting for the WEgate platform, an initiative of the European Commission aimed at stimulating and supporting women-led entrepreneurship in Europe.


26-28 June 2019 – Mobile World Congress (Shanghai): Ms. Cheryl Miller, DLI Founder,  joined the Mobile World Congress on 26-28 June in Shanghai as a guest of hosts GSMA, and participated in the Women4Tech Summit that took place on 27 June.

8 March 2019 – European Commission “Spotlight on Women in Cyber” (Brussels) : On 8 March in Brussels, Ms. Loredana Bucseneanu and Ms. Liliana Carrillo of the DLI Executive Team, contributed to a day-long event at the European Commission showcasing “Women in Cyber” in celebration of International Women’s Day 2019.  Video of the event, which is part of the Women in Digital program supported by Commissioner Gabriel, may be found here.


22-24 March 2019 – W20 Japan Meetings & 5thWAW!/W20 (Tokyo) : On 22 March, Ms. Che Van Dyck, DLI Founding Director,  joined the European Delegation to the 2019 W20 Japan meetings taking place in Tokyo, to deliver a communiqué to the G20 promoting digital, financial and workforce inclusion for women. Ms. Van Dyck also joined the 23-24 March fifth annual World Assembly for Women (WAW!) event hosted by the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs.


29 March 2019 – Career Day (Los Angeles) :   Ms. Che Van Dyck, DLI Founding Director,  joined a 29 March school visit of local actors in the IT, Entertainment and Creative industries, in order to promote STEM careers to young people in Los Angeles County.


9 April 2019 – AWS Public Summit “We Power Tech” Luncheon (Brussels) : Ms. Che Van Dyck, DLI Founding Director,  contributed to an invitation-only luncheon hosted in the context of the annual AWS Public Sector Summit in Brussels on 9 April.


10 April 2019 – AWS Women in Professional Services (Brussels) : On 10 April in Brussels, Ms. Che Van Dyck, DLI Founding Director, delivered a keynote address to the AWS Professional Services gathering in Brussels.


10 April 2019 – WEP & Airbnb “Boosting Female Entrepreneurship in Europe” Luncheon (Brussels) : DLI executive team members joined a 10 April luncheon on “Boosting Female Entrepreneurship in Europe,” hosted by WEP and Airbnb, and chaired by Ms. Claudia Tapardel MEP. 21 January 2019 – “Europe for Her” Conference with European Committee of the Regions (Brussels) : On 21 January in Brussels, Ms. Katja Legisa, DLI/Digital Brusselles Director, joined a panel on “Education and Careers,” as part of an event promoting a larger role for girls and women in Europe’s cities and regions, hosted by the European Committee of the Regions (CoR).


24 January 2019 – #SheDIDIT Learning Library: “Experts Speaking Out”  (Brussels) : On 24 January at Start IT Brussels, Ms. Che Van Dyck, DLI Founding Director,  joined a Learning Library mentorship gathering as one of seven women role models being showcased by the #SheDIDIT campaign, promoting entrepreneurship by women of diverse backgrounds in Belgium.


29 January 2019 –  GSMA Winter Celebration (Brussels) :  On 29 January in Brussels, Ms. Che Van Dyck, DLI Founding Director, joined a celebration of leadership by women in digital sectors hosted at GMSA in Brussels.  Ms. Van Dyck was part of a high-level panel for which the opening keynote was provided by Ms. Mariya Gabriel, EU Commissioner for the Digital Economy and Society.


3-5 February 2019 – W20 Japan  Preparation Meetings at OECD (Paris) : 3-5 February at the OECD in Paris, members of the DLI Executive Team contributed to preparation activities ahead of the W20 Japan 2019 meetings taking place in Tokyo 23-24 March 2019.

DLI Update – Winter 2018

16 November -“Hack the Goals” at Enabel (Brussels): On 16 November in Brussels, Ms. Cheryl Miller, DLI Founding Director, gave an in-depth talk on “Closing the Digital Gender Gap” at the Digital for Development (D4D) knowledge-sharing event of “Hack the Goals,” an initiative of Enabel, the Belgian Development Agency. The D4D event and Hack the Goals closing ceremony was open to the public.


21 November – “Europe’s Road To Growth” with The Financial Times and Google (Brussels): The DLI Team joined a 21 November event on “Europe’s Road to Growth,” celebrating the achievements of 100 digital pioneers of Europe, including Cheryl “Che” Miller Van Dyck, DLI Founder, who were showcased in the Financial Times Europe’s Road to Growth special report. The event took place at the Google Atelier in Brussels.


4 December – MIT Technology Review Innovators Under 35 Summit Europe (Paris): On 4 December, Ms. Katja Legisa, DLI Digital Brusselles Director,  joined the MIT Technology Review Innovators Under 35 Summit Europe 2018 taking place in Paris. Ms. Legisa is a member of the jury responsible for selecting the European Innovators Under 35 recognized at the summit this year.


6 December – Digital Skills and Jobs Governing Board Meeting (Vienna): On 6 December, Ms. Cheryl Miller, DLI Founder,  joined the fifth meeting of the Governing Board of the Digital Skills and Jobs Coalition of Europe. The meeting took place in Vienna as part of ICT 2018 – Imagine Digital, Europe’s largest ICT industry event, hosted by the Austrian Presidency of the Council of the European Union.  Ms. Miller was also member of the jury and announced this year’s winner of the Digital Skills Award for Girls and Women.

DLI Founder is EU Digital Champion

On 21 November in Brussels, Cheryl Miller Van Dyck, founding director of the Digital Leadership Institute International (DLII.org), was recognised by the Financial Times and Google as one of 100 digital champions of Europe.  Miller Van Dyck, who for ten years has led global efforts to increase participation of girls and women in technology sectors, was credited as being a leader and influencer in “promoting digital transformation in Europe.”  Miller Van Dyck and her 99 cohorts were selected from among over 4000 nominations by a jury of their peers representing industry and the public sector.  The digital champions report and event are part of an ongoing Financial Times series on “Europe’s Road to Growth.”

11 September – Chamber of Commerce (Turin, Italy): On 11 September in Turin, Italy, Ms. Cheryl Miller, DLI Founding Director, joined an international working group hosted by the Chamber of CommerceWomen in Business Committee, to examine “opportunities for digitalization to promote women’s empowerment.” Results of the roundtable will be published and promoted to European stakeholders, including the European Commission.


13 September – Women Entrepreneurship Platform AGM (Brussels): On 13 September in Brussels, Ms. Cheryl Miller, DLI Founder,  joined the Board Meeting of the Women Entrepreneurship Platform.


17 September – Digital Skills and Jobs Governing Board Meeting (Brussels): On 17 September at the European Commission in Brussels, Ms. Cheryl Miller, DLI Founder,  joined the fourth meeting of the Governing Board of the Digital Skills and Jobs Coalition of Europe of which she is a member.


18 September – Women Entrepreneurs in Horizon 2020 (Brussels): On 18 September in Brussels, Ms. Cheryl Miller, DLI Founding Director,  gave a presentation on “women entrepreneurs in the digital economy,” including best practices and challenges they face, in the context of an event hosted by the EMPOWA project – aiming to enhance activities by women entrepreneurs in Horizon 2020.


24 September – 1st Annual Meeting of the Interest Group on Women Entrepreneurship, European Parliament (Brussels): At the European Parliament in Brussels on 24 September, Ms. Cheryl Miller, DLI Founding Director,  joined the 1st Annual Meeting of the Interest Group on Women Entrepreneurship, hosted by Ms. Sirpa Pietikainen MEP, IGWE Chair, with the Women Entrepreneurship Platform.


1-3 October – W20 Summit (Buenos Aires, Argentina): Ms. Cheryl Miller, DLI Founding Director,  joined the W20 Summit, taking place on 1-3 October, as part of the 2018 G20 in Argentina. Cheryl is member of the EU delegation contributing to the international dialogue on the topics of Digital Inclusion, Financial Inclusion, Labor Inclusion and Rural Development.


9 October – “Portray Her: Representations of Women STEM Characters in Media” (Los Angeles): On 9 October, Ms. Cheryl Miller, DLI Founding Director,  joined a Global Symposium on Gender in Media entitled “Portray Her: Representations of Women STEM Characters in Media,” hosted by the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media and Lyda Hill Foundation, at the Writers Guild of America West in Los Angeles .


16 October – COPA Innovation Award for Women Farmers 2018 (Brussels): On 16 October, Ms. Cheryl Miller, DLI Founding Director, gave a presentation about the Women Entrepreneurship Platform at the COPA Innovation Award for Women Farmers 2018, taking place in Brussels on 16 October.


18 October – d-Lab Roundtable at Biennal Open City (Barcelona): On 18 October, Ms. Cheryl Miller, DLI Founding Director, contributed to a Barcelona Mobile World Capital panel discussion on “Empowering Women in the Tech industry” in the context of the Biennal Open City festival of the Ajuntament de Barcelona. The panel was part of a celebration of winning projects for the 2018 d-Lab challenge.


18 October – #SheDIDIT Coaching Event (Berchem, Belgium): As part of the #SheDIDIT campaign by Markant VZW, on 18 October in Berchem, Belgium, Ms. Cheryl Miller, DLI Founding Director,  contributed to a coaching event for women entrepreneurs. Ms. Miller was chosen to join the #SheDIDIT campaign with six other “leading ladies with roots outside Belgium,” whom the campaign will promote as role models for youth and the Flemish community at large.


23 October -“Why are there so few women who tech?” with Womenquake (Brussels): Ms. Cheryl Miller, DLI Founding Director,  joined a panel hosted by Womenquake Belgium, on 23 October at the Google Atelier in Brussels, to discuss the question Why are there so few women who tech?
